How to Use Mounjaro and Dispose of Sharps
Using Mounjaro (tirzepatide)
Mounjaro is a once-weekly injectable medication used to help manage blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is also sometimes prescribed for weight management. Follow these instructions carefully to ensure safe and effective use:
Preparing for Injection
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
Check the pen: Always use a new, unused Mounjaro pen. Check the expiry date and ensure the medication is clear and colourless.
Choose an injection site: Common areas include:
Abdomen (away from the belly button)
Thighs
Upper arms
Rotate injection sites each week to reduce the risk of skin irritation.
Injecting
Remove the pen cap.
Place the pen firmly against the skin at the chosen injection site.
Press and hold the button: The pen will automatically insert the needle and deliver the dose.
Hold in place for about 10 seconds after hearing the first click, until you hear the second click, indicating the injection is complete.
Remove the pen and check the window: If the grey plunger is visible, the full dose has been delivered.
After Injection
Dispose of the used pen immediately into a sharps bin (see below).
Do not recap the pen needle after use.
How to Dispose of Sharps
Never throw sharps into household waste or recycling bins.
Always use an approved sharps bin provided by your GP practice, pharmacy, or local council service.
Place all used Mounjaro pens immediately into the sharps bin.
Do not attempt to unscrew, disassemble, or recap the pen.
Keep the sharps bin out of reach of children and pets.
When the bin is about three-quarters full, arrange for safe collection or exchange.

Important Reminder
Store Mounjaro pens in the fridge until you are ready to use them (allow them to warm to room temperature before injecting for greater comfort).
Do not freeze the pens.
Follow your prescribed dosing schedule carefully. If you miss a dose, follow your healthcare provider’s advice.
If you experience any side effects, inform your GP, pharmacist, or diabetes specialist team promptly.
