Cholesterol Lower Injection - Inclisiran
At The Oakwood Surgery, we offer an injection treatment to help lower cholesterol levels in certain patients. This treatment is aimed at those who have already experienced heart problems and need extra support in managing their cholesterol levels.
Who is this treatment for?
This injection may be suitable for you if:
You’ve had a heart attack, stroke, or other cardiovascular event in the past (this is called secondary prevention).
You’re already taking the maximum dose of cholesterol-lowering tablets that you can tolerate.
Your non-HDL cholesterol (sometimes called “bad cholesterol”) is still above 2.6 mmol/L despite treatment.
If you’re not sure what your non-HDL cholesterol level is, we can check this for you.
What is this treatment?
The treatment is a small injection given just under the skin—usually in the tummy or upper thigh. It works by helping your liver remove more cholesterol from your blood. This helps reduce the risk of future heart problems.
It’s given:
Once initially
Then again after 3 months
Then just twice a year
This makes it a convenient option for people needing long-term cholesterol control.
Is it safe?
This medicine has been approved for use in the NHS and has been shown to be safe and effective in clinical trials. As with any medicine, some people may have mild side effects, like soreness at the injection site or flu-like symptoms.
We will discuss the risks and benefits with you before starting treatment.
What happens next?
We invite eligible patients directly, based on your records and recent blood tests. If you think this treatment may apply to you, and you haven’t heard from us yet, feel free to get in touch with the surgery to ask.
We’ll be happy to review your results and let you know if this is a suitable option for you.
